La influencia del hip-hop tanto personal como musicalmente, el efecto de las redes sociales sobre un artista, sueños por cumplir y alguna pequeña anécdota en sus primeros conciertos son varios de los temas que tratamos junto a ella. ¿Como influyó el hip-hop en tu carrera musical?
How did hip-hop influence your music career?
Yo siempre he escuchado hip-hop para animarme, siempre que me sentía agotada y quería darme por vencida, escuchaba solo ese género musical. Se volvió como una especie de terapia para curar mis quiebres emocionales. Era como mi mejor amigo. Creo que la música tiene un poder que da mucha energía y personalmente, para mi el hip-hop es el mas poderoso.
I always listened to hip-hop music (I mean only hip-hop music) to cheer myself up, whenever I felt exhausted and wanted to give up, hip-hop became like a therapy to cure my emotional breakdowns. It was like my best friend. I think the music has a power that gives a lot of energy. The genre of hip-hop is a genre that I personally believe that has a great power.
¿En qué eventos empezaste a pinchar? ¿Recuerdas algún evento con más cariño?
In what events did you start djing? Do you remember any event with more affection?
Recuerdo que mi primer evento fue en un local muy pequeño en Itaewon, Seul (Corea). Mi profesor de dj, «DJ Noah», me dio la oportunidad de tener mi primer contacto con un escenario. Justo antes de que presentase mi set, hubo un apagón en el local y en ese momento mi profesor me dijo que sería una gran DJ, ya que ese edificio nunca se había apagado y era algo muy inusual.
I remember my first debut performance the most, where my djing teacher ‘DJ Noah’ at a small pub in Itaewon gave me an opportunity to perform on stage. Right before I played my set, the whole building suddenly got blacked out. At that time, he said I would become a really big DJ, since the building had never been blacked out and it was a very unusual occurrence.
Eras parte del line up de Beyond Wonderland, que tristemente fue cancelado por el COVID-19. ¿Cuál ha sido la clave del éxito que has tenido para llegar a donde estás ahora?
You were part of the Beyond Wonderland line up, sadly canceled by COVID-19. What has been the key to success to get where you are now?
Soy una persona algo independiente, opuesto a lo que aparento. Pueda que me vean como una chica activa, que se lleva bien con todo el mundo y que es muy extrovertida. Pero la realidad es que soy algo introvertida, más bien me gusta estar en casa sola y salir con muy pocos amigos en mi tiempo libre. Siempre ando pensando en cómo puedo aprovechar mi día a día, cómo puedo hacer para ser mas exitosa en mi carrera y en mi vida en general. Pongo mucho esfuerzo en hacer que las cosas funcionen, como dice la cita «Empezar bien es tener la mitad realizado».
Me reto mucho a mi misma en terminar sea lo que sea que empiezo y pienso constantemente que puedo hacer para desarrollar mi vida como DJ. Quiero ser alguien que pueda brindar una energía positiva a los demás. Una de las cosas por las cuales me esfuerzo mucho es un continuo reto personal de ser una mejor persona.
I am quite an independent person, as opposed to my appearance. I might look like someone who is active, gets along well with others, and is a very outgoing person. However, I am quite introverted and a person who enjoys spending time at home alone, or hanging out with just few of my friends if I have spare time. I always try to think of what I could do to make the time meaningful every single day. I always think about how I could be successful in my career and life, and put a lot of effort towards in making it work and possible. As the quote says, “Well begun is half done”.
I always try to challenge myself by starting off anything I can do at this moment. I keep thinking of what I can do to develop my life as a DJ, to be someone who can give positive energy to people. One of the things I want to keep making an effort towards is to keep challenging myself to be a greater person.
¿Quién ha sido tu mayor apoyo?
Who has been your greatest support?
Bueno, diré que mis padres, pero antes de que empezase como DJ, ellos estaban reacios. Ahora sí les gusta mucho lo que hago, me apoyan, están super orgullosos de mi y le cuentan a todo el mundo lo que hago. Ahora mis padres son la razón por la cual sigo trabajando tan duro como DJ.
Well, I would say that it’s my parents. Before I started as a DJ, they were against it, but now they really like what I do and support me. They’ve been bragging about me everywhere, and telling everybody how proud I make them. My parents are the reason that I would like to keep working hard as a DJ.
¿Cómo han influenciado las redes sociales a tu carrera musical? ¿Te has llegado a sentir presionada a la hora de soltar nuevo contenido teniendo un número tan alto de seguidores?
How have social networks influenced your music career? Do you feel pressured at some point when generating new content due to the large number of followers you have?
Creo que las redes sociales tienen un gran poder e influencia sobre la gente ahora mismo. Recibo bastantes beneficios gracias a las RRSS. En la actualidad hay más personas interactuando por distintas plataformas que viendo televisión. Es mi herramienta más grande para promover mi música y para ser honesta, si me siento presionada cuando uso las RRSS, siento que debería seguir las ultimas tendencias a medida que van cambiando, en vez de estar disfrutando y compartiendo sentimientos positivos con otras personas. Esto para mi afecta la calidad del contenido, mucha gente pierde interés rápido y constantemente me pongo a pensar en como hacer algo nuevo y especial, algo en lo que tanto yo como los demás podamos disfrutar de mi propio estilo.
I believe these are powerful forces as SNS influences a lot of people these days. I also receive a lot of benefits from the function of SNS. Nowadays, there are more people interacting with SNS than watching TV. I think SNS is the platform where I can promote my music actively and to be honest, I feel pressured a bit while using SNS because, I feel like I should be following the trend as it changes, rather than enjoying and sharing the positive feelings with others as before. It also affected the quality of the content, and I feel some people are not very interested in certain content. Every moment, I think a lot about trying new and special content, in which myself and everyone can truly enjoy my own unique style.

Do you have any pending tracks to release in the coming months?
Tuve la oportunidad de colaborar con un rapero estrella de Corea, y la canción saldrá a finales del mes de Agosto, así que por favor ¡Estén pendientes!
I had a chance to collaborate with a Korean superstar rapper. The track will be released at the end of August. Please look forward to it!
Durante la pandemia, ¿Cómo te sentiste al participar en tan numerosos eventos de transmisión en vivo?
During the pandemic, how do you feel about participating in all kinds of live streaming events?
Nunca había hecho transmisiones en vivo antes del COVID-19, me sentía nerviosa al principio como si estuviera en un examen, pero me sorprendí y me puse muy contenta al ver mi nombre en el quinto puesto de las tendencias a nivel mundial con mi primer live, he recibido tantos comentarios positivos que desde entonces hacer trasmisiones se ha vuelto muy divertido. Aquellos que no veían bien mis transmisiones dudaban y decían que mis actuaciones como DJ no eran reales, pero me alegró ver que esos comentarios negativos eran cada vez menos con cada evento. Esto se volvió una nueva motivación para mi, ya que se sentía genial tener la oportunidad de demostrar mis verdaderas cualidades.
Since I had never done live streaming before COVID-19, I felt nervous at first because it was like taking a test. However, I was so surprised and happy to see my name ranked 5th on the worldwide trends for my first live stream, and I received so many positive responses. Since then, streaming live has become so fun. The doubters who do not watch my performances carefully always attacked me by saying that my DJ performances were fake, but I was happy enough to see that there were fewer malicious comments while I was on live streaming. It became a new leap for me, as I felt great that I had the opportunity to show my real skills.
¿Tienes sueños sin cumplir? ¿Te gustaría actuar en Europa algún día?
Do you have any dreams to fulfill? Would you like to perform in Europe one day?
Me encanta actuar en Europa. Ya lo he hecho en varias veces ocasiones en World Club Dome, tanto en su festival como en sus fiestas. Este año tenía como meta tener más actuaciones y dar a conocer más mi música en Europa. Espero de que la situación actual mejore pronto para visitar a mis fans europeos.
Yes, I would love to perform in Europe. Although I got to perform in Europe several times at various ‘World Club Dome’ festivals and events, my goal this year was to perform and show my music to people and fans in Europe. I wish to play my sets in Europe this year, hopefully after the current situation improves. One day I will visit Europe and meet many fans!
Para terminar, ¿Como es DJ SODA fuera de la música y de las RRSS? ¿Tienes algún pasatiempo de gran interés?
To finish, how is DJ SODA outside of music and SNS? Do you have a hobby that you are interested in?
Mucha gente piensa que tengo una vida ostentosa, pero en realidad soy una persona bastante común. Soy tal y como cualquiera de tus amigos o vecinos que ves en tu día a día. Mucha gente se sorprende después de tener una conversación conmigo. Soy una chica que le gusta coleccionar zapatillas y figuras de Star Wars y creo que es interesante que me guste coleccionar cosas como pasatiempo.
Many people might feel that I live a fancy life, but in fact I am just an ordinary person. I am just like one of your friends or neighbors you might meet during your daily life. Some people get surprised after having a conversation with me, since I am just a person who likes to collect sneakers and ‘Star Wars’ figures. It is interesting that I enjoy collecting things as one of my hobbies.
